June 4th, 2008

If you love touring castles and spending time outdoors, you will appreciate a visit to Gillette Castle State Park in CT. The Park features the Castle home of actor William Gillette who is most known for playing the role of Sherlock Holmes.

Some very unique features make touring Gillette Castle a fun adventure both children and adults will enjoy. Intricate woodcarvings, wooden light switches, track doors and built-in couches are just some of the highlights of Gillette’s intriguing home. In addition to being an actor and playwright, Gillette also created trick stage props for the theater, and visitors get a sense of his ingenuity when they see the “special effects” in his home.

In addition to touring the Castle, you can explore trails throughout the 184-acre estate at the Park. There are many vistas and unique geological formations to see along the trails throughout the Park. Man-made attractions include Gillette’s personal railroad and railroad station and his goldfish pond. You can also see reproductions of famous 19th century paintings in an exhibit that is part of the Connecticut Art Trail.
