Unknown to many, tattoos and doctors do have a long history. In fact, tattoos have been used in many medical purposes like radiation therapy and reconstructive surgery. This may seem very surprising to most people as they would usually relate tattoo to beauty and aesthetics purposes but not medical ones.
Tattoos are used to mark the outer limit of a treatment area in radiation therapy to ensure that the radiation is applied accurately and consistently to the same spot. In reconstructive surgery, tattooing is used to help create a normal looking nipple and areola for women who lost their breasts to cancer surgery.
