Diploma Nurse to BSN – A Good Idea?
The diploma nurse and the associate-degree nurse (ASN) receive essentially the same education. Diploma nurses get their professional entry-level training at a hospital-based nursing school, after which they may take the NCLEX-RN examination and apply for a license as a Registered Nurse (RN). Both diploma programs and ASN programs take about two years. While the number of nursing schools based in hospitals has decreased, but they do still exist. Some require applicants to complete their non-nursing educational prerequisites at other schools before admission.
The Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is also an entry-level nursing degree, and it can usually be earned at a community college. Students who complete the ADN courses may also take the NCLEX-RN license examination. Recently, some hospital-based nursing programs have changed their course offerings to provide the ADN instead of the diploma.
The debate about whether a diploma or ADN nurse should go for the BSN degree has been going on since professional authorities suggested the BSN as a prerequisite for professional nursing practice in 1923. Diploma nurses and ADNs have always been very proud of their accomplishments and skills and often state that they know more about actual patient care and clinical procedures than any new BSN graduate!
However, the professional landscape for nurses has changed. The health care field is becoming more complex and technology-oriented, and there is a trend toward placing more responsibility on the shoulders of nurses. Health care is moving from a primarily hospital-centered inpatient institution to a system focused increasingly on primary and preventive care in the community. Particularly at the entry level, a nurse needs more skills in community-based primary care, health promotion, and coordinate, cost-effective patient care.
This means that nurses must be able to function professionally both in and beyond the hospital setting. They may need to practice their profession in many different facilities, make more clinical decisions, handle case management, supervised unlicensed health care aides, and educate patients about complicated health issues. Modern nurses need to be more confident about their abilities and more independent in their decision-making than nurses in the past.
As a result, nurses who have earned the BSN degree are better prepared to meet the needs of the modern nursing profession. The major difference between the diploma nurse or ADN and a BSN is the latter’s focus on leadership and management education and on community-based nursing. BSN degree programs prepare students to handle health promotion, prevention of disease, disease management, and patient education. As the health care field moves further and further into these areas, the demand for professionals with the BSN degree increases.
The BSN degree provides nurses with many more career advancement opportunities – and higher pay – than the diploma or ADN degrees. The health care industry faces a growing demand for nurses on the front lines of primary care, managed care, and cost-effective care. While every diploma nurse or ADN need not pursue the BSN degree – and at the initial stages of a nursing career, the benefits of the BSN may not be apparent – more education will lead to more responsibility, higher standing in the profession, and more opportunities for career advancement and higher salaries. Some states are already requiring a BSN degree for all new hires, and some industry observers believe that the diploma and ADN programs will eventually disappear altogether.
It’s possible for working nurses to earn a BSN degree without taking time away from their current jobs or sacrificing their regular income by enrolling in accredited online RN-to-BSN programs. And often, a current employer may provide education benefits that can be applied to cover the costs of these programs. Many four-year nursing school programs offer “fast-track” programs that allow practicing nurses with the diploma or ADN to get a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in about two years.

Three years after fighting at Cocherel, Du Guesclin was again taken prisoner at Najera (1367) after fighting gallantly as the ally of the Castilians against the army of the Black Prince. Here again English and French fought on foot, and the novel feature of the battle was the encounter of the Spanish genetours or light horsemen with the English men-at arms and archers. The arrows of the latter soon drove the genetours of’ the field, for their horses were unarmored, and they could not get near enough to throw their javelins.
Du Guesclin was made constable in 1370. He made it a rule to avoid pitched battles with the English, but in a few years of harassing warfare he expelled them from nearly all the French territory which they had gained. The lesson was soon forgotten, and at Agincourt (1415) another constable gave Henry V. the opportunity to outdo Poitiers. Henry was marching north to Calais with an army reduced to less than 10,000 men. The constable, D’Albret, had declined opportunities of attacking him, but took up a position barring his road with an army six times as numerous. Between the woods of Agincourt and Tramecourt there was half a mile of ploughed land through which the road ran, and the French army was posted a little to the north, closing the mouth of this defile.
St. Remy says : ” They had sufficient archers and crossbowmen, but they were unable to use their bows from the narrowness of the place, which did not afford room for more than the men-at-arms.” There were three corps, one behind another, in very deep formation ; and, as usual, each of the French knights claimed to be in front. All were on foot with the exception of the rearguard, and of two bodies of about 600 horsemen in front of each wing, who were to ride down the English archers.
Henry took care not to play his opponent’s game by trying to force a passage. He drew up his army about a mile to the south, in front of Maisoncelle. As soon as the mounted men who were in front of the wings of the French army began to feel the English arrows, they charged; but the ground was sodden, and under the rain of arrows few of them were able to reach the stakes, which the archers had refixed. Most of them found their horses unmanageable, and rode back upon their own vanguard, which was toiling after them, and in which they caused much confusion. It pressed on, but not with an even front: “either from fear of the arrows, … or that they might more speedily penetrate our ranks to the banners, they divided themselves into three troops, charging our lines in the three places where the banners were.” ‘

Parenting Tips
Parents play a vital role in their child’s education. Our Job as your Student Advocate is to help you set the course of your child’s educational career, parents may interact with a large number of professionals (e.g., their child’s special education teacher, general education teacher, occupational therapist, speech therapist, physical therapist, and perhaps many different consultants).
Being able to work effectively with these many professionals, exchanging ideas and concerns, communicating openly about what’s working and what’s not, are important elements in their child’s educational success. You need to diplomatically, but strongly, advocate for your child.
Develop relationships with the teachers who work with your child.
Remember that the people you are working with also care for your child.
If something is not resolved quickly, work on it. You may be able to help your child’s teacher resolve something much faster. Work as a team.
Remember that working with the school can be a very emotional and personal process, because this is your child. Encourage those who work with your child to do so also.
Remember to think of your child first. The disability is just part of who your child is. Remind people of your child’s strengths. Encourage teachers to praise him or her.
Encourage a work ethic at home. If you are not sure about how to talk with teachers, connect with other parents. Talk to other parents about what they are doing.

Praise the people who work with your child even when things aren’t going as well. Appreciate them when they’ve had a particularly hard day with your child. Let them know that you appreciate their efforts on your child’s behalf.

We all know one right - the guy or girl who dropped out of high school because they didn’t like the hard work, or didn’t get along with the teachers, or hated being told what to do. And tell me, what has become of them today? Most of the dropouts I know have dead end jobs and wonder why they can’t get further in their careers. Most of them hate their jobs because they aren’t challenging enough.
The answer to their question of course is upgrade your education and you will upgrade your career, no matter what age you are. It’s simple to say, not always simple to do when we get older. But the fact of the matter is if we keep learning and growing and educating ourselves we become personal powerhouses of knowledge. Nothing can stop us. So following up on your education even as an adult can make a world of difference but almost bear in mind to see different cultures and countries on Earth. Men don’t want it known that they like to show off. Paradoxically people get the drift when they come parading in their pricey shoes, shirts, and other stuff. * Don’t talk about price unless someone asks you for it.
* Stop cubicle-hopping at the workplace unless you’re office’s social butterfly.
* Stop looking furtively at your new suit, shoes and coat when you wear this to work or to a party. This gives you away.
* Stop bragging that you got the thing at an amazingly discounted price, which is still pricey.
* Don’t ask how the shirt or shoes looks on you. It’s bad taste.
* Do not corner that girl at the water cooler and preen.
* Keep busy; they will come up and notice you have something nice on or something new on your desk.
* Wear or use the appropriate item for an occasion. You do not have to put on your new aviator glasses inside the office just to broadcast what you have.

Blame technology and superior artisanship for coming up with novel stuff like your pewter flask with a belt bouch. Okay, you want to show them off to unwary women. Here is how to grab their attention without promoting yourself short or going overboard.

Don’t forget, while you are completing your course this shouldn’t prevent you from approaching P.I. firms. Many employers are impressed by those taking the initiative and may even offer the option of utilizing your services on a work experience level.

It takes a 13 and 1/2 weeks training for a commission in the USAF.

A high school diploma can get you in and you can sign up for courses that can be credited in college later on. You can get computer jobs, health care positions and much more to complement your interests and skills.
